Homeschool Orators Pursuing Excellence
- HOPE -
HOPE D3B8 Camp
For homeschool students 13 – 18 years old
What is debate? Merriam-Webster's definition of debate is "a regulated discussion of a proposition between two matched sides." Debate is not hostile bickering of arbitrary points, but an organized means of using logic and rhetoric to express facts in a persuasive manner, based upon evidence. The class sessions are designed to give students instruction and practice in basic theories of argumentation as applied in scholastic debate. We will follow the guidelines of the National Christian Forensic and Communication Association (NCFCA) league. Students will learn to research a topic, build an affirmative case and organize negative arguments. They will learn to deliver them in the debate round structure. The last session will be a Mini Tournament to let the students debate. The camp will also have Activity times, interspersed during the day. The Activities will include such things as an indoor pool, kickball, basketball, ultimate Frisbee, etc., and inside games such as pool, ping-pong and air hockey. Where: Gilmary Center
